Hello! My name is Richard. I am an interaction design student and illustrator with a background in engineering and mathematics, as well as a deep interest in the humanities, arts and the social sciences alongside my creative endeavours.
Some things I value are creativity, balance, understanding, connection, compassion, and truth. I think these are important ideas to being happy, as well as to being effective. I think a holistic perspective on things are useful, and that really welcoming the complexity and uncertainty of reality, sticking to truth is the first step to not just understanding but to being able to cultivate change, both in the world and in yourself.
I think the world is made of systems and people. I would like to help make those systems clearer, kinder, more compelling and more empowering for the people inside them, to find new ways of solving difficult problems, and to hopefully make the world or wherever I find myself just a bit better in the process.
Generally, I keep hearing it said there are more problems now then ever, problems which grow more complicated and interconnected by the day. It is concerning, but to me it only really means one thing: It's time to get to work!
The very first drawing I made was a marker drawing of an imaginary car from when I was 4. From there onward it was off to the races. I mostly taught myself, keeping an emphasis on the fundamentals, and I’m always looking to improve.
I think there is a lot of beauty in life. Its just there, even in the mundane and the everyday, and I enjoy engaging with it through photography. It also helps with creativity!
This is a very recent hobby - I decided to start trying that over the last year. I don’t think I am that good yet but it has been fun, especially with my friends who share my interest. They are way better then me at it too - I have a lot of catching up to do!
I distinctly remember that growing up we had a big boxed set of IMAX documentaries. I loved watching them, learning about space and oceans, about people, history, nature and more. I was captivated. It’s probably my oldest “hobby.” I like following my curiosity, and trying to understand the way the world ticks.
I love engaging with stories and media, whether its books and movies, TV shows to videogames. It ties directly into my love of art other hobbies - World building, storytelling, communicating meaning in a way that is compelling and fun.
From piano classes (on my terms) as a kid to playing the trumpet, I love to play. I also love to listen as well - Some of my favourite genres include rock, folk, classical and soundtrack music.
